DALTON (WDEF) – A foundation funded by carpet industry titans is giving back in a very unique way in a one-of-a-kind program that provides individuals with training and certification in a much-needed skill. Thursday was the groundbreaking ceremony for the ten-week Basic Flooring Installation Program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College in Dalton. All students receive a full scholarship from the Floor Covering Education Foundation.
“What we were designed to do is publicize career paths in flooring installation, bring new talent into the pipeline for flooring installers, and then study that training,” says the foundation’s executive director, Jim Aaron.
Supported by Shaw, Mohawk, Engineered Floors and the World Floor Covering Association, the program is brand new and organizers hope to replicate it across the county.
“Even schools like Kennesaw, they can’t guarantee you interviews or jobs after you graduate, so hear that not only are they starting this program and there’s a scholarship opportunity, but the fact that they can hopefully, by the end, get you an interview, that’s something I’ve never heard another school go above and beyond to do for you,” says Wesley Ruiz, a student in the program.
“There is such a need, none of these people will have trouble finding a job. There are flooring installation crews and flooring stores that will hire these guys right away,” says Aaron.
The foundation says another course begins in May. Interested students should visit fcef.org.
